Who has it easier, an author or a songwriter?
Listening to the radio on the way to work the other day and knowing the long hours it takes to get a manuscript to a point I can say it's ready to be submitted, I thought how much easier it would be to just write songs. Love songs are, after all, romance stories. The short, short version anyway. But still, they do tell a story. Three or four lines repeated several times. Maybe throw in a 'yeah, yeah, yeah' every now and again. Simple.
Then I remembered - music. Oh, right. People who write songs also write music. That's what makes the words become a song. Well, there's a roadblock not easily overcome since I'm not musical in the least.
Then, I thought about similarities in the two professions. Pitching being one. Just as with writing a book, the songwriter has to submit his or her work and pitch to a publisher unless they are the artist recording the tune. I'm sure they worry about their baby and wonder if it will be a hit just as authors worry no one will like their book.
So I suppose I'll just stick with what I know best and keep learning the business which means there's a little writing in my near future. Dreams Do Come True is not going to write itself.
